For the past 100 years, plus, humans across the planet have been enjoying the freedom of bicycling whether for sport or leisure. In the late 1800′s it has been documented that the bicycle truly transformed the Culture of Women. I did not know this? Did you? Want more facts click here The Bicycle symbolized more then just a trendy fade or favorite pastime.
“The bicycle created this opportunity for women to leave, to see the outside world quite literally,” says author Sue Macy, Author of “Wheels of Change: How Women Rode the Bicycle to Freedom.”
As well, ”Let me tell you what I think of bicycling. I think it has done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world.”- Susan B. Anthony
When we hear the word “emancipation” we often think of the Slave Trade. I had no idea there was such a social emancipation of Bicycles freeing Women in the turn of the 20th Century. This is monumental. How did we forget about this?
Apparently, the forward progress for Women throughout history appears to be very personal. Hence why it possibly missed the history books. The “burning of the bra” has been historically a benchmark for women. Now, quickly discovering the transformation from petticoat to bloomers, setting the path for liberation for women.
Where did we miss out in telling the stories of progressive women in the 1800′s. The courageous pioneers of self propelled transportation. Women who through out their petticoats, as a result of the bicycle for women, and started wearing bloomers.
Sue Macy, I applaud you for documenting facts about the History of Women which has been long forgotten.
My conclusion is this? We, Women, need to read and understand this monumental part of our Legacy as Women. When we finish reading this book? We need to share this history with the next generation of women; our daughters and granddaughters.
