In 1914 a boy left home to go to War.  He never returned but he left a significant message…

On Vashon Island (near Seattle, Washington), a tree grows carrying  an old bike left by a boy who went off to War. Apparently some kid chained a bike to the tree decades ago and never picked it up, leaving the tree no choice but to grow around the bike.

The tree and island gained some level of notoriety when Berkeley Breathed, creator of Bloom County, wrote a children’s book inspired by the bicycle eating tree entitled Red Ranger Came Calling.

Wow… precious, priceless and a little pathetic.  The pathetic part?  Were still fighting battles who shouldn’t been and sending our children to do the job.  The precious and priceless part?  This bike still exist in the middle of the tree after, almost, 100 years.  I wonder how many cars where made in 1914?
